After Your Painting Arrives

Caring for Your Painting

Every Moonlit Canvas Co painting is an original oil on stretched canvas — painted by hand, signed, and built to last. Oil paint is remarkably durable, but like any artwork, it benefits from thoughtful display and care. The six principles below cover everything you need to know.

Hanging

Use two D-ring hooks or a French cleat for stability. Ensure the wall can support the weight — a stretched canvas is heavier than it looks. Avoid hanging directly over heat sources like radiators or fireplaces, which can cause the canvas to warp or crack over time.

Light & UV

Oil paintings fade slowly but surely under prolonged UV exposure. Avoid hanging in direct sunlight or under strong halogen spotlights. North- or east-facing walls offer soft, indirect light and are ideal. If your space gets intense sun, UV-filtering window film is worth considering.

Humidity

The ideal relative humidity range is 40–60%. Avoid bathrooms, kitchens, or rooms prone to condensation. Rapid humidity fluctuations cause the canvas to expand and contract, which can lead to cracking or paint flaking over time. A simple room humidifier helps in dry climates.

Handling

Always handle your painting with clean hands or cotton gloves. Hold the painting by the stretcher bars on the back — never press on the painted surface. Even gentle pressure can leave permanent impressions in the paint. When moving it, keep it upright and carry it vertically.

Dusting

If dust accumulates, use a clean, dry soft-bristle brush (a wide make-up or watercolour brush works well) and sweep very lightly across the surface. Never use water, sprays, or any solvent-based cleaner on the painted surface — moisture can lift paint and leave permanent marks.

Long-Term Care

Oil paintings can be professionally cleaned and restored if needed — this is a service offered by conservation specialists. If you ever notice cracking, flaking, or significant darkening (beyond the natural warm patina of aged oil), reach out to a professional conservator rather than attempting DIY repairs.
